Have you ever had that sinking feeling when you're working out? You just finish cranking 8, 9, 10 reps on a curling bar at the heaviest you can do. You have just beaten your personal best and your arms feel like lead. Then you look over and you see some guy who is using a heavier weight and going at them for stamina training!
I know its silly, bordering on pathetic, but i get that feeling quite a bit. Its really annoying because it can upset your own focus and can spur you to try to do weight too heavy (has done that to me before)
As hard as it is to stay focused on yourself, thats what you need to do. Blinker yourself so that all you see is the weight, or your own eyes reflected back at you, or whatever. Tuned out from everyone and everything else. I find it so difficult sometimes, especially if i am having one of those days where it feels like all the hard work is in vain and no more gains are coming!
I know this is a rambling thread, but does anyone else ever feel like that? Or is just me being stupid?! lol!

Hello,
I know what you mean about being in the gym and feeling jealous about other people's physiques.
I usually ALWAYS think the same thing. Whenever I see a guy who is much more muscular, I think: He's been training longer than me, thus he's had MORE TIME to build muscle mass.
And you know what? I'm usually right.
Go read interviews with HUGE bodybuilders. They usually have one thing in common: They started training VERY young. I read one bodybuilding book and the author stated he started training at age 11.
I'm training to be a fire fighter. I was at a fire station and there was a fireman who was HUGE (Like 17 inch arms). I asked him how he got that big. He said "my genetics and I've been working out all my life"
He was 38 years old.
I'm 23 years old. He's got 15 years of training (and 15 years of muscle building) on me.
Another example: I went to the physical fitness exam for fire academy. There was a guy my age there who was huge too (220lbs, all muscle, very lean). I got to talking to him about working out. He explained he's a hard-gainer like me. He's been training rigorously (and dieting) for 3 years.
I've only been training since November 2005. So he's got an additional two years on me.
See a trend? It's all about time. Whoever has trained longer will be bigger. That's all there is to it.
Greg
PS: Going the way I'm going now, in 2 years I should be 210-220lbs too. |

Yep. I remember pulling enough weight to hit the 3/4/5 club and being at what I know now was my peak. Of course, those weights are just entry points into competitive lifting LOL - the absolute bare minimums...just enough to mean you are ready to START training to powerlift.
So - my PEAK - someone else's barely acceptable starting point...
All perspective. I'm waaayyyy smaller than I was when I was at my peak (life happens - being a dad's more important than gym time, just can't hit the same focus). Kind of a downer as we were just looking at pics of when my daughter was very small and I was thinking holy cow I was big back then. Hard to not notice the difference. Two days later - a Couple of weeks ago - someone told me physically I was their idol (their words not mine). Again, perspective.
So at the 'smaller' size - much smaller than the peak which isn't really strong enough for me - someone's idol.
In other words, having a good physique is a good thing - it doesn't have to be the BEST or HUGEST. Just be darn proud of what you're achieving and take a look at those progress pics once in a while, remember what you've achieved! Man, i looked at one of those early starting pics of me and couldn't believe it!! So yeah, smaller - but still WAY better than it was.
Point is: EVERYONE can point to someone doing 'better' than they are doing in some way. My Dad always says "you can never be top dog" LOL which is a way of saying the same thing.
And yes - TK, you WILL cross 170 before end of the contest. What's with this "4 drinks" stuff? You know exactly what that is: it's your 'ghosts' you are defeating yourself because you keep seeing yourself as 'small' and your subconscious is fighting to keep you the way it thinks you are.
Well repeat after me: you're big. Built. Strong. 170 lbs.
GregJ - I'm guessing you'll be 210 by this time NEXT year, not in 2 years. The rate you are progressing is stellar.

Malek thanks for your support. I am motivated right away.
I didnt drink yesterday because i was sad. I drank because i was going out with a guy and couple girls from work.... and i wanted to cheat them and just order coke in a "vodka coke" glass but it wasnt possible somehow.... ... I just hate to see that other people drink whatever they want eat whatever the f*ck they want... and can get away with it. Ofcourse i am not saying they are fit by any means..... But they are having more fun in their life with a crappy body than me with a sexy one...And it just hurts to see that.... Tell me if i am wrong.. |

You know something - I recently discovered I have no interest in alcohol any more! I used to be a Scotch afficionado...now my body says "yuck, this is poison" when I smell it.
However, today I had fun eating some chocolate stuff, ice cream, etc. - and I don't feel that good. So I'm really not 'missing out' it seems. I have a great time in general with visits, I just am no longer food/drink motivated. Strange! But we change
And I know you were not drinking because you were sad - but you will find things 'just happen' that knock you off your path until you realize you are the person in your goal, and are *temporarily* under, much the way a person is dehydrated. Drinking water again will restore you - that's how you need to see yourself.
Otherwise, you'll have 'things just happen' to get in the way, this is the subconscious wreaking havoc when it doesn't recognize the guy in the mirror. Honest - this has happened to me over and over...I recognize it now and have slowly moved my mental image of myself.
watch out for it - it's the hidden enemy.

By the way, Tk, just had an idea: people sometimes tease me at parties and say "hey, just have a drink/chocolate/food, etc. "
If they get too bad with me I pull my shirt a little and say "really, I don't need any more beer, I already have a six pack"
Typically, there's a bit of quiet - then "holy crap are you RIPPED", etc. So I don't feel like an outsider and instead of pressuring me to 'join in the fun' it's a 'gee, how can I get that too'
So we all have a good time and the uncomfortable part goes away. They appreciate me being different rather than trying to make me conform. And psychologically that's a better feeling than wanting to get away from the pressure in the party.
Maybe try that out...

I dont drink. I dont have an issue with it.
However...
I still have issues with cheesecake and pie. If I'm sitting next to a bunch of people eating cheesecake and pie (apple, pumpkin, cherry, whatever) I get killer temptations and usually have at least a taste (a tablespoon size portion)
god, I love cheesecake...

I have never had a problem with something like that, if i don't want to, i don't touch them. But, i remember 2 years or so ago when i was trying to loose weight (i was 240 approx of fat) the secretaries i used to work with would leave chocolate, cakes and all sorts of other things on my desk. It was terrible!
I just had to remember what i wanted and how badly i wanted it. For me, that would quell the temptations and i wouldn't succumb to eating them.
Cheesecake though... God its been a long time since i had any! Lol!
